BOTOX and Dermal Fillers Q & A
What do dermal fillers do?
Dermal fillers reduce the appearance of lines while plumping sunken areas on the face to create a more radiant, youthful complexion. The function of dermal fillers depends on what they’re made out of: Whether it’s a purified toxin, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, or deoxycholic acid.
Purified toxin
Repeated muscle contractions create facial creases over the course of time. Purified botulinum toxin blocks the nerve and muscle activity that cause crow’s feet and frown lines.
Hyaluronic acid
First used for injections in achy joints, hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in your body. When injected under the skin, the acid fills in lines and plumps lips, scars, and cheek depressions.
Calcium hydroxylapatite
Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral found in human bones. The substance helps enhance volume and stimulates collagen production below moderate to severe creases.
Deoxycholic acid
Our bodies make deoxycholic acid to break down dietary fat. In injection form, it destroys and reduces body fat in the same way.

What happens during treatment?
First, Dr. Ku maps out the injection points on your face and takes a “before” picture to record your results. Then, he cleans your face and administers an anesthetic, if requested.
Next, Dr. Ku proceeds with the injection. He inserts the needle, injects the filler, and massages the treatment area to distribute the filler.
He continues this process at all treatment sites until he achieves the desired outcome. The process takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of treatment. You can get fillers during your hourlong lunch break and return to your desk right after.
